Nancy’s Afghan Story 11/13/18

Let me share with you my afghan story.  Some of you could be familiar with this story and some may not.  It is so much fun to think back to 1969 when it all started and what Mom’s intentions were at that time.

Let me first start by saying that this afghan is almost 50 years old since Mom started it in 1969, how can that be possible?  I have taken care of it over the years and it has moved with me to Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York, always carefully packed.

Well, in 1969 Mom was very busy with Dad, Bernie, all 10 of us, the house, and all the yearly sporting events, church and social obligations etc.  To say her plate was full would be an understatement. Along with that, she was trying to be frugal, thrifty and smart. So for her Christmas gifts to her sisters in 1969 she decided that she would knit an afghan for each of them starting with Aunt Margaret.  Aunt Margaret’s favorite colors were green and blue. So Mom selected the yarn, picked out a special pattern and went to town. By late November of 1969 she realized that she would never get afghan #1 done let alone two others. So a light bulb went off in her head and she realized it would be a great graduation gift for Nancy and she could do the same for the rest of the children.

It was not a surprise when I graduated that I would receive the afghan.  Mom was very open about her plan. I liked the idea and the afghan traveled with me to St. Francis.  It’s interesting that this afghan means more to me now than it did in June 1970.

Mom gave us a piece of herself with this special gift.

So there you have it,  that is how the afghan tradition started.

As you all know I have a grandson, Michael who graduated this year from high School.  My daughter-in-law Becky has carried out the afghan tradition and presented Michael with his own afghan.  Mom would be proud.
